About the NLW DAMS
The National Library is one of the great libraries of the world. Its home is in the seaside town of Aberystwyth in Ceredigion. Since 1911 it has enjoyed the right to collect, free of charge, a copy of every printed work published in Britain and Ireland. In addition we have a huge collection of works about Wales and the other Celtic countries: books and pamphlets, magazines and newspapers, microforms, ephemera, and a wealth of electronic material.
The mission of the library is:
To collect, preserve and give access to all kinds and forms of recorded knowledge, especially relating to Wales and the Welsh and other Celtic peoples, for the benefit of the public including those engaged in research and learning.

An essential part of this work is the appropriate management of the Library's digital assets within a secure, accessible and preservation-worthy environment. It is with this aim that the National Library of Wales has begun to develop and implement a Digital Asset Management System (DAMS)

Fedora / Vital
The National Library of Wales' DAMS uses the VITAL system from VTLS. VITAL is based on the open source FEDORA (Flexible Extensible Digital Object Repository Architecture) software. For more information about FEDORA visit the FEDORA Website and Wiki.
In addition to VITAL itself, NLW is undertaking a range of development work to produce a cohesive DAMS - as well as making use of open source components from the FEDORA community.
